The Cut, among the 4Cs, is the only attribute that can be improved through human craft. It is the one that matters the most and one that differentiates Estrella Diamond from others. Estrella Diamond follows a very strict set of mathematically calculated formulae when it comes to diamond cut. Diamonds that fail to meet the criteria will be rejected.

On top of the usual 4Cs, Estrella Diamond follows the 5th C - Consistency, which has brought the brand to where it is now.

How different is Estrella Diamond compared to other ideal cut brands?

To answer this, we have to first explain what is an “Ideal Cut”. Traditionally, the definition of “Ideal Cut” is diamonds that are cut to the strictest proportions to maximise light performance. Ideal cut maximises a diamond’s beauty instead of its weight. It is a term meant to differentiate better performing diamonds from the Triple Excellent grade diamonds. However, due to its popularity among buyers, many jewelers abused the term by using “Excellent Cut” and “Ideal Cut” interchangeably to mislead customers.

Sometimes jewellers also use the term “Super Ideal Cut”. This term is used when an ideal cut diamond has 8 perfectly symmetrical hearts and arrows, making it even rarer in the trade. Super ideal cut diamonds do not only produce maximum light performance but also ensuring equal light distribution that will increase perceived brilliance, as well as creating the right amount of visually appealing scintillation pattern. However, for convenience purpose, many abused the term despite not meeting the criteria.

In reality, only a handful diamonds are truly ideal cut, lesser so for the case of super ideal cut.

Ps: Many people, including jewellers, often assume that ideal cut and hearts and arrows always go hand in hand. In fact, they are two different qualities. Having one does not guarantee another as ideal cut is associated with a diamond’s proportion, while hearts and arrows is about a diamond’s precision.

Why don’t others do the same?

While it is easy to set criteria, not many have the expertise and discipline to follow it through. It takes years of experience, time and effort to achieve such excellence and sometimes sales have to be sacrificed.

Diamonds that are cut to maximise beauty, not carat weight, have a lot of wastages from their roughs. Cutting these roughs with an objective to maximise beauty could result in a lower return of investment for jewellers.

On top of that, to uphold the true “Super Ideal Cut” standard, many diamonds will be rejected at the production stage causing year long supply shortage. Hence, not many jewellers are willing to commit.

Due to these reasons, prices for ideal and super ideal cut diamonds tend to be more expensive as compared to normal cut diamonds, based on just 4Cs alone. But what you get in return is a higher performing diamond that sparkles better and appears to look bigger than the stated carat weight. This is why most of our customers who have owned an Estrella Diamond have difficulty settling for less.
